Summerschool – Acquiring and post-processing 3D data in Anthropology and Archaeology, Bologna, 26 –30 June 2017

From June 26th to 30th will be held in Bologna (Italy) the summer-school in “ACQUIRING AND POST PROCESSING 3D DATA IN ANTHROPOLOGY AND ARCHAEOLOGY”

It is suitable for undergraduate/graduate students, PhD students, post-doctorates in the field of anthropology, archaeology, medicine and dentistry who are interested in developing basic, but fundamental, skills in 3D data acquisition and post processing.

The participant will learn different kinds of technologies for 3D data acquisition (e.g., surface scans, X-ray computed tomography – CT), methods for post processing surface data and segmenting/visualizing image data from (micro)-CT sources to create 3D digital models.

250 € undergraduate and graduate, phd students
400 € post doc, researchers and others
(The fee includes coffee breaks and insurance premium for injuries and civil liability)

Summerschool – Data-Driven Archaeology, 27 Mars-8 Avril, Pisa, Italie

The Spring School will enable participants to manage the life cycle of digital archaeological data. It is built around a new paradigm, which takes into consideration archaeologists as both producers and users of digital archaeological data. Attendees will learn the concepts and methods of data retrieval, management, analysis and communication through an integrated use of software and mathematical principles. The Summer School will take place from March 27-th to April 8-th 2017, at the University of Pisa, Italy.

Target attendees
Students, graduates, PhD candidates, and post-docs in archaeology or related to Cultural Heritage. Specific computer science or technology skills are not required.

In Humanities, the exponential increase in digital documentation requires us to question its management, its use, its availability to the scientific community and its sustainability. In archaeology, these issues are even more crucial because they relate to non-reproducible primary data. In order to effectively store, manage, prepare for analysis, and communicate the information and the scientific range of such an amount of data, modern archaeologists should be able to deal with concepts and tools related to new technologies. Such digital competencies are not present in a standard archaeology background, though they are very important, in order to effectively interact with IT experts.

The Data-Driven Archaeology spring school aims for a fruitful combination of archaeology and mathematics through the teaching of Data analysis, Data mining, and Data visualization techniques, together with a Big Data approach, extremely relevant but by no means common across Humanities. The large amounts of data that are produced through archaeological work, show a wide degree of heterogeneity, complexity, and interconnection, making the use of algorithmic methods unavoidable.
